School History

We drove into the village of Shouldham one day in 2000 and spied a boarded up Victorian old school, a new school having opened at the other end of the Green and thrives . Luckily for us it was just about to be sold by auction and having sold our house we were in a position to proceed.

The school was built in 1866 to accommodate the ever growing primary school population of the village. Next door is the Georgian School which is now a private house having been the head teachers house for many years. The school architecture is ecclesiastical in scale with lots of gothic features. It has recently been listed as being of sufficient importance to warrant Grade  2 status.

We completely renovated the school renewing the roof, the plumbing and the electrics. We added a couple of part mezzanine floors keeping as much of the double height grandeur as we could so that we could ensure the “wow” factor.

In 2005 we added a full height conservatory within the two wings of the original school – this provides a light and airy spacious breakfast  room overlooking our lush and colourful garden.

Visitors need to prepare themselves for an eclectic collection of furniture, styles, artefacts and interesting items from our travels and Bridget’s auction forays.

A small gift shop area provides our guests with the chance to buy souvenirs of their trip.

The School looks over the Green and the community owned pub which has been in existence for centuries has been voted Camra pub of the year in West Norfolk for the last three years and serves the community that has rescued it from oblivion well and also provides award winning pub food for our guests.

A field opposite the School can be walked up towards the Church. It is a historic monument having been the location of the original village in Saxon times prior to obliteration due to the “black death”

What our guests say...

"One of the best places I've stayed. This place is amazing! Wonderful stay in their separate cottage, very quiet location, much needed if you need a break away from it all. "
